Why did I decide to take part in KTLC 2021?
There were a few reasons, but the main one was its theme.
As we can see on its website, KTLC 2021 was focused on the following topics:
“G – Growth – both in terms of growing your business and developing as a human, growing your community and your skills
A – Automation – how to make your life easier, and what the possible pitfalls are
P – Professionalism – communication, quality control, taming misbehaving CAT tools… you name it!”
“Can you tell us a bit about the different presentations that took place at KTLC 2021?”
The KTLC 2021 allowed all of us to learn from colleagues and other professionals from all over the world. Some of the most interesting topics were Buyiswa Mini’s presentation Reflection on The Development Of African Languages: The Case of South Africa With Particular Reference To Translation from English To IsiXhosa, John Mastrogiannopoulos’ Why would I need DTP (Desktop Publishing)?, Sabina Jasinska’s Digital inclusion: creating accessible content for all, Anke Betz’s Expert panel: Court and legal interpreting, and my own, titled Trip towards a more inclusive communication process.
“What did you talk about in your session, Veronica?”
Good question! During my presentation, Trip towards a more inclusive communication process, I addressed, among other ideas, the importance of gender-inclusive language and how to use it in a professional field.
I elaborated on the fact that translation and journalism are fields of expertise and knowledge in which using the right words to express specific messages is essential. The truth is that they can truly encourage and help women and certain communities be heard and recognised as a valuable part within the business world.
This presentation also aimed to address these issues and explain why we can use non-sexist language so easily that it doesn’t take much time to grasp and, thus, make ALL people feel welcome in your speech.
Why are conferences a good place to meet people?
Conferences are a wonderful place to interact with people, and not just colleagues, but also sponsors and organisers. Did you know that by doing so, you are opening yourself to a whole world of opportunities?
If you are an introvert, don’t worry If you can present a topic as a speaker, you can also speak to other people during a coffee chat!
Because business conversations don’t need to be risky or scary. Just think of them like a “not-so-informal coffee chat!”
Who knows where those opportunities may take you? Maybe a new project? A new collaboration? An invitation to a new conference you did not know about?
Who dislikes that?
Come on! We don’t bite! You will not regret taking part in one. So, what conference will you attend next?
